"Were there's a wolf, there's...

Night Play
(Were-Hunter #2)

By Sherrilyn Kenyon

Were-Hunters are both human and animal. The Katagaria and the Arcadian, two breeds of Were-Hunters are sworn enemies.   The Katagaria are animals that can take human form maintaining their basic animal nature, whereas, the Arcadian are humans that take animal form keeping their inherent human nature. This transformation takes place during puberty as well as the initiation of their supernatural magical powers. Their hatred of each other stems from ancient mythology and continues to the present.

Vane is a Were-Hunter wolf of mixed breed: an Arcadian Sentinel and a Katagarian.

This is Vane’s story…

Night Play introduces us to the world of were-animals: bears, panthers, hawks, and in particular, wolves. Vane, a member of a Katagarian wolf pack, assists Talon, a Dark-Hunter by protecting Sunshine from a lethal group of Daimons.  This decision initiated the Daimons (enemies of the Dark-Hunters) to retaliate by attacking Vane’s pack that resulted in his sister, Anya’s death. The security and protection of the pack must occur above everything else. It is the pack’s foremost, most important objective. Consequently, the alpha, Vane’s father, banishes Vane and his brother, Fang, and allows Daimons to combat the brothers. This deadly struggle leaves Fang in a comatose state, and now, Vane alone, has to care and protect both of them. They are 2 lone wolves, targeted for death, without the protection of a pack. They find refuge at Sanctuary, a safe shelter that accepts Weres, Dark-Hunters, Daimons and Apollites.

Alone and miserable, Vane is reacquainted with Bride McTierney. After first seeing her with Sunshine (in Night Embrace), Vane is still mesmerized by Bride’s beauty. Later, Vane discovers that Bride is destined to be his mate!  Unbelievable! Another complication!

Now to Bride, his mate… Bride suffers a devastating break up with her boyfriend and cannot believe someone as handsome and considerate as Vane desires her. Bride’s inner demons and insecurities about her weight cause her initially, to reject Vane’s attention and she questions his kindness and intent. Nevertheless, Vane has 3 weeks to complete the mating ritual, or he will be celibate as long as Bride lives! Therefore, Vane has to convince Bride to accept him, half-human/half-wolf, as her mate for life.

This is my 1st Were-Hunter story. I’m captivated with the Dark-Hunters, and I wasn’t sure if I would like the Weres. The mythology of the Weres can be overwhelming, somewhat confusing; however, I enjoyed meeting Vane. Vane is the typical sexy bad boy who emits the mystique of the charismatic loner.  An alpha male, Vane is dangerous, territorial, and emotionally conflicted; he’s constantly tormented by the bad boy mantra, “she’s better off without me”.

Night Play has some great humorous scenes, conversations, and characters. Fury, Vane’s brother is hilarious, especially when he and Vane visit Bride’s family for Thanksgiving dinner.  LOL. Another great scene is Vane’s attempt to have “normal” dinner chitchat conversation with Bride.

“She took a sip of her water. So what do your parents do? (Bride)
Think of creative ways to kill each other. Vane cringed as that flew out of his mouth.”

Overall, the story is…enjoyable
